Dr. W. Andrew Hodge, is a world
renowned orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthritis surgery and bioengineering
research. He holds several U.S. patents on orthopedic implants and devices, and
has published over 100 articles in prominent medical journals.
His work has been recognized on CNN News, the Discovery Channel, Science
Magazine as well as many local, national and international televised news
channels. He recently traveled to Croatia to conduct a humanitarian joint
replacement surgical service. In Boston, he completed special fellowship
training at both Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During ten
years of performing surgery, conducting research, and teaching in the
Harvard/MIT system at Massachusetts General Hospital, he designed and directed
the BioMotion Research Laboratory for studying human motion and rehabilitation.
Dr. Hodge founded The BioMotion's Institute for Mobility and Longevity in 1987
as a non-profit organization to support orthopedic and related research and
education.
In 2001, Dr. Hodge designed and
patented the 3D Knee (Data Driven Design), a revolutionary concept in knee
replacement designed for a more active and demanding patient. The 3D Knee was
first implanted into a patient in Palm Beach, Florida, and has now become the
fastest growing implant design in the country. With the information collected in
research and clinical studies, Dr. Hodge is widely published and lectures
nationally and internationally on the subject of joint replacement surgery and
rehabilitation.
While maintaining affiliation and
academic appointments at MIT and The University of Florida, Dr. Hodge continues
to focus his joint replacement practice in the Palm Beaches. In basic terms,
joint reconstruction means resurfacing or replacing part or all of an affected
joint. The majority of joint replacements are necessary due to the joint being
severely damaged by arthritis. This major surgery is only considered after a
combination of physical therapy and medication has not been able to relieve the
patient's symptoms. Dr. Hodge is also deeply devoted to non-surgical solutions
which will evolve through his research in the coming decades.
